There he is. The 11th Doctor with his new partner in crime. Her name is Karen Gillan and she is playing Amy Pond.

While he may be dressed like one of those boring teachers at school you always advoided, it could be just what the Doctor needed.

Stephen Moffit is now in charge, as Russel T David stepped down. This is good. While is enjoyed Davis's Doctor Who he never really got in to a good roll.
I mean this as in he would use simple plot devices to ruin a great cliffhanger. He would use a stupid RESET button and everything would be done and dusted.
He did what he thought the public wanted.

Moffit who was script writter for some of the best episodes is now in charge and his script stories have always been darker, more of a edge, and most of the time quite funny.

Though Karen as Amy Pond looks set to be better then the doctors last few weak assistants. Plus she's the best looking.

The first time I saw it I didn’t enjoy it, I wasn’t sure if it was down to high expectations, or just the fact it was rubbish. But, after seeing it a second time I understand what I hated on my first viewing.
It was the annoying group of people sitting near me who talked over the whole movie, screaming out what was basically on the screen as if they had been hired to give a running commentary over the movie. It got to the point where I hoped the film would end quickly so I could leave.
Luckily I went to see it again and I loved it. But, if I see those annoying people in the cinema again I will, on no un certain terms, set fire to the shits.

PLOT- Gay Austrian fashion reporter Brüno is fired from his show after disrupting a catwalk show during Milan Fashion week. Accompanied by his assistant's assistant Lutz (played by Swedish actor Gustaf Hammarsten), he travels to the United States to become a superstar.

Borat has to be one of the funniest, most cleverest movies of all time. I saw Borat in the cinema on my own. There was one other person in the screen (who sat a little to close to me for my liking, but at least HE DIDN’T TALK while the movie was on…no, he was a good boy). I was, at the time, not a huge fan of Ali G and showed no interest in seeing the movie. But, while I waited for my girlfriend to finish work I went and saw the only film that was on at the time that would fit in with her finishing.
It was brilliant. Made better for the low expectations.
Sasha Baron Cohen was a genius. Since then I watched all the Ali G shows and loved them. Cohen picks of the stupid and self righteous and destroys them without them even knowing.
It’s all done as a spoof documentary. So, the people he interviews (while working through a plot) believe Borat, Bruno, Ali G are real people and don’t think they are being set up.
As Borat, in the film of the same name he goes in to a gun shop in America and asks the owner ‘what is the best gun to kill a Jew?’
The gun shop owner doesn’t batter an eye lid and shows him a gun which he describes as perfect for killing Jews.

It’s, for some, hard to watch, but if you can stick with it you will see that it is entertaining as it is teaching. Sure, it has gross out moments and it’s very silly but, it shows up the people in this world who believe strongly in things us ‘normal’ people deem wrong.

Bruno first saw light in the Ali G show where he danced next to some sexy cheerleaders at a sports match in Alabama. The men watching stood and stared as a gay man danced. They boo’ed, spat at and chased.

The main point about these movies is just how clever Cohen is being. First up if I didn’t know better I wouldn’t know Ali G

Borat

and Bruno

are played by the same person. They look so different and sound so different and it’s easy to see how people play in to their every words.
In a world where Gervais, Mitchell and Webb, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson etc play and look the same in every part they do it’s nice to see a comedy star make an effort.
Ronnie Barker became Fletcer and Arcwright with ease and looked so different and acted so different. The same with Steve Coogan in Partridge or the calf family.

The film flows along at a quick pace. The scenes I won’t spoil, though the cage fighting at the end is brilliant and should have you in floods of tears. Or the part where he tells a terrorist his leader Osama looks like a dirty wizard, it’s just balls out humour that shows people for who they are.
When he tells a women he wants to uses her child in an ad campaign, she agrees. When he says he wants to dress her child as a Nazi pushing a Jew in to an oven, she agrees (just so her daughter becomes famous)

The problem with this movie lies with the main character. Ali G was an idiot, he would get his words wrong, he loved his gran and his Juile and you loved him for that.
Borat was child like and in awe at what he was seeing so you didn’t mind when he did something shocking.
You loved him for it.
Bruno on the other hand has one main goal and that is to be famous. In the movie he tries to make a sex tape just to be famous, he chats to the stars, he starts a fight, he buys a black baby, all to get famous and in a world of Paris Hilton etc it’s sick to see.

But, when Bruno is not trying to be famous, and when he is trying to become straight that is when the movie comes alive. When he goes shooting with a group of hunters and crawls in to one of their tents naked is over the top and very funny.
Or when he interviews a certain Amercian Idol judge who says she 'loves human rights' while she sits on a chair Bruno has given her which is a real life Mexican man.
I won’t give the rest away as it is a shocking movie you have to see.

Brilliant.

8/10

Not quite as good as Borat, and not as funny as The Hangover.

 Comments
</default:description>

Before I go on I must admit I have seen this movie twice over the last three days since its release.

In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

This could have been one of the greatest movies ever told. He had all the right ingredients for a classic cinematic movie that would stand the test of time. Michael Mann who did great work directing Heat, Collateral among just a few. It also stars Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. The former being the dark moody character actor who likes to get under the skin of the person he is portraying, and the former being the worlds most likable star with his kooky and sometimes quite bizarre roles.
Sadly this movie misses the mark so many times that it leans more towards being a turkey then an actual classic.

While epic sweeping movies such as The Godfather, Raging Bull, and the Goodfellas (to name just a few) can be told over the course of many hours, you can forgive them for being so long because they have a gripping and intriguing story to tell. They are also, most of the time, based on books or real life stories. This is based on a book which is based on real life events.
While some directors and writers like to spread the fiction in to true stories to add more tension to the plot or maybe add a few more action events, Mann keeps this pretty close to
the real story.

This is his main flaw.

The story is really interesting. A 1930’s setting for a Robin Hood like character to steal from the banks and give to the poor. He was hailed as a great hero among the public. Dillinger was maverick who was liked by everyone, even the bank workers he stole from. Even the police and law firms liked him for his slick and quick ways of robbing a bank and giving the money back to the people. But, in this film we never get to see any of this. Depp plays him with all the cockiness and cool manner you want and expect, but the film never gets under his skin and sees what makes him tick. All we see is the few glimpses of humor and a blood thirsty gangster. He doesn’t mind, or at least shows no remorse when innocent people are killed during his crime wave. Considering this is the guy who the public adore and he respects back doesn’t make to much sense. And, while this is no Sparrow, Wonka, Wood, or even Brasco Johnny Depp still plays him well.
Well, he comes across better then the boring Bale. Christian Bale is in his third movie in a row where he is the good guy getting out acted by the bad guys. First in The Dark Knight, then Terminator and now this. Sure, he plays the role Purvis well, the FBI agent trying to track him down. He just doesn’t get to do to much except look bored and look motionless.
The great fiction stories of agent after suspect are often played better when they have interaction between the two, be in The Fugitive or the second season of Prison Break. Two people from different sides of the law trying to get their job done.
Here they don’t get much screen time, it lets the whole film down. I know it’s a true story but I needed more.

Though more of this film and I would have fallen asleep. It moves along at such a slow pace you just want Depp to drink some rum and swagger around making this an enjoyable romp.
The supporting cast are good, but we never really get to know them. It’s also a little confusing in places due to Depp’s gang losing and gaining more men throughout the movie, and vice versa with Bale’s gang.

The Road to Perdition with Tom Hank’s had a similar and much more exiting pace and style to it. I’d recommend that.

The film is very weak and let down by the pace.

I guess sometimes sticking to the real life events isn’t always a good thing. Maybe someone should consider that next time they watch an Oliver Stone movie.

Not even Depp can save this yawm through film

19 years ago Take That were playing to Gay clubs and school halls.
17 years ago Take That played to arenas and got their first of 11 number one singles with the song Pray.
16 years ago Take That played a European tour which took them all over Europe ending in there Manchester home town
15 years ago Take That release there biggest selling hit Back For Good and get ready for another massive tour.
That same year one of them leaves due to drug related problems and distancing himself from a band that he felt were massive yet never cool.
14 years ago Take That split. A special helpline was set up for the millions of upset girls.
For the next ten years they all tried different solo things. Some didn’t go as well as others. The one that got away first though became the biggest selling solo artist ever. Selling more albums, more singles, more concert tickets, more merchandise, and winning more awards then any other solo artist in Europe (out that against Bowie, Colins, Richard, Elton John, the solo acts from The Beatles etc it’s impressive). He sold out three nights at Knebworth to 375,000 people. The biggest in the country and still it is un beaten. During his Knebworth show’s he dedicated his song No Regrets to Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen and Jason Orange.
5 years ago there was a Take That documentary.
A year later Take That, minus the one who’d left a year before they split, reformed. It should have, for all intense purposes been a disaster. They are in the later half of their thirties. They won’t be able to dance, they won’t sound good. It will be a desperate bid to sell a even newer greatest hits package.
It was brilliant. Owen, Barlow, Donald, Orange did sell out arenas to mass sell out crowds. All the dance movements were there, they sounded great. They were brilliant. In fact, they were modern.
A year later they released a new album which was a belter. They all took writing credit, instead of just Barlow. They went on tour and they were even better.
Now with a new album The Circus they finished their third tour in five years at Wembley Stadium.
The boys did good.
To see 86 thousand people clapping to Never Forget is a testament of their power.
The truth is though they needed to split up in 96. They needed to get away and be forgotten.

This is my manly review of seeing Take That at Wembley stadium……

After good support acts from Gary Go and Lady Gaga the boys arrived at 8.30pm. The lights didn’t go down, there was no ‘and here’s the band’ on the speaker. Just a small quite circus show slowly building up with gentle music over the top. The anticipation was at a high from all the women around me.
On a side note it’s great to see a lot more men at the concerts. When they reformed it was me, a gay guy and 40 thousand women. Nice to see a higher ratio.
The balloons on the B- stage flew away and Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason stood on the stage and burst in to Greatest Day.

SET LIST
Greatest Day
Hello
Could it be Magic
Pray
A Million Love Songs
Back For Good

Now Take That are not old as people, but for a band (ex boy band now man band) they are. They are beginning their late 30's/40's and you wonder where they get their engery from. From wiggerling their hips in Could It Be Magic and swinging from side to side in Pray.
But, it never looks wrong or like a dad dancing. This is a proper show and proper moves. Plus they still have sex appeal. The fans who loved them in the 90's, the young girls who loved their boyish good looks have grown up as well. The girls turned women nows need real men to stare at and wish they were the boys...sorry, mens wifes.

All on the B stage. Cracking out some boy band moves from days gone, and getting soaked by the water machine for Back For Good.
Then a plastic elephant appeared to carry them to the main stage.

As the plastic elephant, with people inside moving the legs like it was walking, moved to the stage we got the glimpse of a women with long hair hung upside down on the elephant's backside like a tail.

After a costume change they picked up instruments to prove they can play guitars, drums and pianos.

Up All Night
Wooden Boat
How Did It Come to This

What is Love
Do What You Like / It Only Takes a Minute / Take That and Party
Said It All

Then they changed in to clown make up and suits and did a funny melody of Take That hits. Donald, Orange and Owen rode uni cycles, while Gary came out in a clowns small bike shouting to the audience he couldn’t ride the uni cycles.

Never Forget
Patience
Relight My Fire

Howard who only sung Never Forget back in the days sings alot more and has the nicest voice out of the lot. He also has the best song of the night, a beuitful poetic song called What Is Love?
Then Jason, who only sung in the background when they were first around. He was more the dancer. But with songs such as Wooden Boat and the fantasic How Did It Come To This? he has the story telling songs.
I feel that on their next record, which is rumoured for next year, they may need to change things around a bit before they come a little samey and still. Maybe gives Donald or Orange a single.

A round of hits and cracking encore proved that they can hold their own in a stadium.

Encore:

As a massive Robbie Williams fan I wouldn’t want him to come back to Take That. But, watching the four guys together it’s very hard to see where William’s would fit in if he did. I can't see Williams doing Could It Be Magic dance moves, plus it would be wrong for him to sing on the songs the band has made since he left/sacked/walked out/got bored of (or whatever William's reasons are on his ever changing moods.
With a new album by Robbie in September and a tour next year Robbie needs to do one thing and one thing only, beat Take That.

The thing is Robbie left and Take That failed. Robbie goes to rest in LA and goes out the spot light and get rid of his demons, Take That reform and become the new nations sweethearts.
Can Robbie and Take That work on their own things but still be in the same charts, can both work together at the same time. Can there only be one winner? Maybe.

Robbie is the best entertainer, though his last tour he let himself down due to his weirdness of aliens and his on going battle with his inner demons. But, he has proved he doesn’t need Take That.

Set List cont-
the Garden
Shine
Up All Night
Wooden Boat
How Did It Come to This
Love Aint Here Any More / Babe / Nobody Else (Gary Piano Solo)
The Circus

What is Love
Do What You Like / It Only Takes a Minute / Take That and Party
Said It All

Then they changed in to clown make up and suits and did a funny melody of Take That hits. Donald, Orange and Owen rode uni cycles, while Gary came out in a clowns small bike shouting to the audience he couldn’t ride the uni cycles.

Set List cont-
Never Forget
Patience
Relight My Fire

One of the great things about Take That is they are not afraid to play their old hits. Relight My Fire, Never Forget etc fit in well with the new stuff.
And then the clown/old Take That hits melody is a tongue in cheek to the days of lycra and bum wiggerling. They know that their first ever single, which got to 98 in the charts, Do What You Like is horrble. But, playing it is just a sign that they love to make you smile. It's done without the cheese.

One of the great things about Take That now is they all do singing. Gary has the love songs, and the more disco tech songs. He's voice soulful and pure pop.
Mark has the kooky cheerful songs such as Shine and the fanatsic Hold Up The Light.
Howard who only sung Never Forget back in the days sings alot more and has the nicest voice out of the lot. He also has the best song of the night, a beuitful poetic song called What Is Love?
I feel that on their next record, which is rumoured for next year, they may need to change things around a bit before they come a little samey and still. Maybe gives Donald or Orange a single.

A round of hits and cracking encore proved that they can hold their own in a stadium.

Encore:
Hold Up A Light
Rule The World

Towards the end they all look caught up in how this moment is treating them. From being the biggest band to being alone, with out music contracts and watching other boy bands form, then coming back to mass appeal and perfoming in front of 86,000 people. They look touched by the responce and how they have been treated.

Fire works, trapeze artists, clowns, water canons, fire, dance moves, drummers, everything in a circus was there. It was a full on show.
Compare it to world wide stars like Spears or (if he had done them) M Jackson who dance and mime their songs, Take That make sure they dance, jump around, have fun while singing LIVE (For Owen this is not always a good thing mind)

As a massive Robbie Williams fan I wouldn’t want him to come back to Take That. But, watching the four guys together it’s very hard to see where William’s would fit in if he did. Williams could never go from what he has to being with them. It would ruin the dynamic.
With a new album by Robbie in September and a tour next year Robbie needs to do one thing and one thing only, beat Take That.

PLOT- Two cavemen wander around and over act.

I’d seen the trailer a few times and could tell it was going to be rubbish, but for the sake of people saying “well if you haven’t seen the actual movie how do you know it’s bad”.
Well know I can be totally honest.

Given that I didn’t even bother to do a proper ‘plot’ section may give you some idea how I felt about this movie. To give it some credit I did smirk at a few lines that were said in the movie. But, I doubt the writers, cast and crew set out to make a movie that people just smirked at some bits.
The film is over long, washed with set ups for gags that filter away, and moves along at a slow pace. It’s shocking how this kind of talent in the movie was so badly used.
Jack Black must have of a bad day when he accepted to make this. I mean, the premise isn’t even that good. It’s not one of those movies where you go ‘oh the premise was good but the film was rubbish’ the whole thing was just an embarrassing mess. To give Black his credit he does try he best at the start, but when the film starts to deal with actual plot a messy script and bad adlibbing destroys any chance he has of coming out of this with his head held high. But, he gets of very lightly compared with his on screen side kick.
Michael Cera is crap.
Is that to rude? Well, maybe…but, he is total crap. I have watched Cera in the under rated American sitcom Arrested Development were he played the part of the kooky teenager down to a tee. Then stared in Juno where he was really good as a kooky puppy dogged eyed teenager. He was also good in Superbad as the kooky puppy dogged eyed teenager. In Nick and N…I think you get the idea. If not I will spell it out…Cera only plays the same looking and acting part in all his movies. He used to do them so good but now he plays Black’s sidekick with the same boring tones and he has lost any of the magic which made him a star in the first place. I enjoyed him in Juno and AD because he would drag out lines and do a shifty awkward look away and still be cute. But, in this he is just crap. I mean awful. He drags out lines and adlibs to still look cool, but he fails. Plain crap. He is not, and can not be the person he wishes he was…Bill Murrey.
Talking of the ex Ghostbusters, Rammis has a bit part but he looks so old and fat that you wonder why he gave himself an on screen role. Maybe if he stayed behind the camera and worked on a decent script then maybe it would have been better.

The script just doesn’t have the power punch needed for this type of movie. The reason people like Black, Cera, Rudd and Rammis do funny comedy is because they know their cult history and add lines in that are relevant today, and do impression of other movies/shows/comics, most the time being in jokes. But, being set in year one they can’t do any of that as it’s set way before any cult references can be made.

I’m going to keep this review short (un like the movie) and just tell you not to see it.

It’s rubbish and when I watch a comedy I don’t just want to smirk I want to laugh.

This left me a little numb

Ghostbusters’s 3 better be good or I’m coming after you Rammis and I won’t stop at just angry words…

Michael Cera, who was brilliant in Juno. Paul Rudd who was brilliant in I Love You Man. Hank Azaria who was brilliant in Night At The Museum, and put them in a film which is co-written with two of the writers from the fantastic The Office USA and Harold Rammis who wrote and directed the amazing and clever (and very funny) iconic movie Groundhog Day, add to the fact he also co-wrote and stared in Ghostbusters 1 and 2 you should…in theory have a fantastic movie that should wipe all other comedies out of view.

Welcome to a great cinematic art house movie. A movie that’s a slow burner but the love and intensity makes this beautiful movie flow to a warm conclusion.
That’s a lie, and I think you all knew it.
This film is directed by Michael Bay who likes to make a movie that’s big on bangs and thrills. How can you tell that Michael Bay has directed the movie you’re watching? Well just see what there is more of, dialogue or loud explosions. If it’s latter then your more then likely in Bay world.
You see Michael Bay does not do big and clever. He just does big.

But, with a film like this one it’s hard to think of anyone else who could direct it. Steven Spielberg maybe, though he is one of the producers on the movie.

PLOT- The battle for Earth has ended but the battle for the universe has just begun. After returning to Cybertron, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons, and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots believing that peace was possible finds out that Megatron's dead body has been stolen from the US Military by Skorpinox and revives him using his own spark. Now Megatron is back seeking revenge and with Starscream and more Decepticon reinforcements on the way, the Autobots with reinforcements of their own, may have more to deal with then meets the eye.

The movie picks up two years after the first movie. A movie that was actually better then I thought it would be. It combined wit and humour along with all the action pieces to please the easily pleased, and enough ‘geek’ input from the cartoon shows to please the hard-core fans.
To be honest this sequel is pretty much just a re-hash of the first movie. And, while the plot is about as simple as a footballers wife, it (like a footballers wife) gets very confusing when it tries to explain what’s going on.
The story is good vs evil. Good robots fight bad robots. Good robots work with good humans. But, the story of the ‘Fallen’ and how it’s a power source to a Matrix or something or other gets so over blown that it needs to be mentioned in the movie three or four times, one of the times one of the characters actually turns to the other and say ‘so, let me get this straight…’ then goes in to explanation.

To give the script writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who wrote the first movie and the newest Star Trek movie) credit they add a lot of humour and banter in to the script to give it more life. Not just the humans, the robots get a few good lines as well. The humour works well, but not much else does.
Which is a shame, because really the human side of things is much more interesting then the robots. Maybe if the movie was just humans vs robots then it would be much more interesting.
Another of the confusing matters in the movie is the same problem the first movie had, all the robots look pretty much the same. When there’s one on one robot fighting, unless it’s Optimus Prime (whose big, blue with red bits) it’s hard to tell who is who. Especially since Michael Bay moves things so quickly with inter cut scenes from different angles.

The acting from the humans is pretty solid. Shia LaBeouf is good doing what he is done in most the movies I have seen him in, but he holds the human ground strong. He has to deal with the robots, saving the world, dealing with his sexy girlfriend, and his over annoying parents. His parents were funny in the first one, but here they become annoying (not as annoying as over using the dog humping another dog joke…4 times Bay…I counted!).

Megan Fox is sexy, she holds strong ground in a role which really has her running in a low cut top, sweating, and having her breasts bounce in the for mentioned low cut top while in slow mo. The thing is she is a great actress, the similarities that have been made between her and a certain Mrs Pitt are correct. Mrs Pitt is gorgeous as well, but she is also a very strong actress. But, I guess all good looking girls need to start somewhere.

On a side note, while I was watching this I sat in front of and behind some guys who I didn’t know (it wasn’t a gay sandwich before you ask) and the sad thing was they made this groaning noise like they had just orgasm’ed every time a new transformer was on screen, where as Megan Fox made all the others…orgasm.

The truth is, although over long, the film is what it is. It’s quite simply a summer block buster. He has a strong human lead, a sexy girl, lots of explosions, funny one liners and a brain less plot. While it doesn’t beat Star Trek as the blockbuster of the year, it certainly beats Terminator Salvation. TS took itself more seriously then a Daily Mail reader, where as Transformers 2 knows what it is and how it should work.

7/10

'Michael Sheen is in talks to play the villain in the next James Bond film, reports say.
The actor has been approached to take on the role of legendary bad guy Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the Daily Express reports.
Sheen, 40, would re-team with The Queen and Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan, who has been confirmed as a co-writer on the latest instalment.
The diabolical leader of global criminal organisation SPECTRE was seen in six previous Bond films, where he was played by actors including Donald Pleasence, Charles Gray and Telly Savalas.
Max Von Sydow starred as Blofield in unofficial 007 outing Never Say Never Again in 1983. However, the last legitimate appearance of the character on screen was in For Your Eyes Only in 1981.
"Michael is hot property right now and it's felt he's the man to bring Blofeld back to life," a source said. "Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him."

Not only would it be cool to bring Sheen in as Blofield, who was the most important villian in the Bond world that was never really dug in to.
But, it would make Sheen the big star he deserves to be. Next year he is be in Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland, but this would be a coo for Bond and him. Though Daniel Craig could beat Sheen with a little slap, but Blofield was never a fighter.

During the Vietnam War, the A-Team's commanding officer, Colonel Morrison, gave them orders to rob the Bank of Hanoi to help bring the war to an end. They succeeded in their mission, but on returning to their base four days after the end of the war, they found their C.O. murdered by the Viet Cong and his headquarters burned to the ground. Therefore no proof existed that the A-Team were acting under orders, and they were sent to prison by a military court.
PLOT- A loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point

Yes, this is a film directed by Sam ‘Spiderman, Evil Dead’ Raimi. But, no, there is no Bruce Campbell. He has appeared in small cameos in every Raimi film. He is the biggest CULT figure in comic book movies and horror movies. His names raises a smile and his status is iconic. But, he is not in this. Which is a shame. Though do check out a TV show called Burn Notice which is in it’s third season now, it’s very cool, slick and funny and he is in it.

That’s enough about him though. As I said he is not in this movie. This is one of the few horror movies that have come out in recent years that is not a remake. This is a good thing of cause and the script and direction is original. Raimi, since his pre Spiderman days, has always directed horror movies and they have always been rated high. And, before he goes back to direct a Spiderman 4 (news of which I’ll keep updated on the blog) he has gone back to horror.

Does it work?
Well yes…and no.

Yes, it makes you jump quite a lot, but it’s more crazy scary then proper scary. I’m sure as a nice short story, or a episode of the Twilight Zone it would work a lot better. But, as a film I’m not to sure.

Alison Lohman certainly puts herself in to the role. She is a great female for a horror movie. Most of the time they run around screaming, but she (along with a few running around screaming) puts actual acting muscle in the role.
I’m sure with some decent scripts and smart direction she will become a big name in films in years to come.

The tension is built up nice and there is not such thing as happy endings for a film like this. But, with a smart cast and a great direction with a half baked script the film is just about under par with the last film that I jumped at.

Oh dear.

PLOT- Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

The first three Terminator movies had a simple plot for a causal viewer to watch, though you could look for the complex subplots if you were that way inclined.
Put in simple blocks.
The Terminator- The 38th Governor of California comes from future to kill a women whose baby will grow up to destroy robots.
The Terminator 2- The 38th Governor of California comes from the future looking like the 38th Governor of California from the first film, but this time he is good. He helps the mother and son from the first movie survive.
The Terminator 3- A good version of the 38th Governor of California comes back and fights a women who is not the 38th Governor of California.
They were simple plots with lots of fighting, big bangs, good vs evil, and some very funny lines. It was over the top. It was silly. It was big. It was cool.

This, first of a second trilogy, is a poor effort. It is set during the ‘dark times’ that was spoken about in earlier Terminator movies. John Connor (played by Christian ‘ I’ll use the same voice I used for Batman’ Bale) is leader of the resistance. He’s the main star but he’s hardly in it. Nor does he look like the important person he is meant to be.
The whole point for robots from the future coming back to kill a young Connor was they didn’t want him destroying them in the future. But, here he is shown as just another average man in the fight between humans and robots.

Then there’s the confusing plot about John Connors dad. His dad’s name is Kylie Reece and in the first film he is sent back to the past to protect Sarah Connor. He gets her pregnant and dies. She gives birth to John. But, in this film John is in his 30’s and he meets his dad who at this time is only 15. He has to save him so his 15 year old dad can fight for ten years then go back in time to protect his mum so John can be born…woah!!!!!!!!!!
Then there is the plot about Marcus Wright (played excellent I might add by Sam Worthington) who used to be human then when he died was re built as a robot. But, he is good. Though no one thinks to begin with……woah!!!!!!!
Then there’s Bryce Dallas Howard who has a thankless part as John’s wife.

The truth is there is so much going on plot wise that it doesn’t always connect in the good manner. While James Cameron built his films on ground break action, CGI which at that time hadn’t been seen before and great dialogue, director for this film McG makes a very poor job. He lets the script get to complicated and tries to make these ground break action moments. He can’t do it. Though saying that, he makes the future landscape look dark and gritty, as it would do after a attack from big ole robots. He does however look like he has played to much of the computer game Fallout 3 and just stolen the setting for that.

Bale doesn’t make a dent as he character. He is wasted and when he is on screen he adds nothing of any importance. The only good thing he did was say ‘I’ll be back’, a nod to the first film. Bale is a great actor, he was a fantastic Batman, and more to the point Bryce Wayne. But in the Batman films he is given a decent script and decent stuff to do. Here he is wasted. Most of the cast are.
The films core was about Marcus and he was played brilliantly and to be honest if the movie was about him saving the humans it would have made a better movie.

If they are to carry on this trilogy they need to…well….be better….

Very poor.

It’s title was so long that I can’t remember it, though people are just happy to refer to it as ‘Borat’.
With Sacha Baron Cohen back with another creation in July with ‘Bruno- The Movie’ all bets were on that it would be the biggest comedy of the year, or the decade.
I thought the same. The trailer looks brilliant. And I think he is a comedy genius.
Then this film came along.
The Hangover.
It’s brilliant. It passes the mark of the comedy movie of the decade. It works on many levels and the quote rate is high. The characters are all flawless and played to perfection.

PLOT- Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party - Doug, Doug's two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy's brother Alan Garner - hop into Tracy's father's beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn't be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race for time as if they can't find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.

I have seen many movies where stag nights go wrong, or the hangover the next morning leaves people confused at what they did the night before. Truth is, though, I can’t remember there titles or what they were really about. But, in no un certain terms will I forget this movie.
Some movies have the tag bestowed to them that they are ‘a laugh a minute’ and for the first hour they normally are, then towards the finale of the movie things become to ‘lovey dovey’ and drama sets in and the comedy is just a back burner. But, this movie literally is a laugh a minute, even through the credits your still laughing and wishing for more.

Bradley Cooper (who after seeing him in this movie better be Face from the A-team in the remake) is the cool handsome man who seems to have a plan for everything, though as the movie goes on we see that something’s don’t always go to plan. When he tells Mike Tyson (playing himself) that his tiger is ‘the most beautiful creature in the world’ and then a shot of CTTV footage it makes you laugh to the point where you wonder what people have caught you doing on camera when drunk.

Ed Helms as the dentist Stu is the straight laced one, his wife has recently had sex with a bartender, or a pilot, or maybe it was a sailor (though she doesn’t like semen) becomes un hinged as a tooth gets lost and the events around his get out of control. He also seems very good at coming up with songs on the piano.

Then there’s Zach Galifianakis as Alan (looking like a hairy John Goodman) whose lonely life is lifted when he is asked to become a groomsman, or ‘part of the wolfpack’ as he puts it. He is left holding a baby, and pissing of a child at the polic station, which he later finds out to be a bad move.
Heather Graham plays a small part as the hooker with a heart and has a few good lines and joins in with the gang when they are most needed.

But, they all look like they are having a ball.
The film never lets the pace down. Just when you think the ‘wolf pack’ are closer to finding Doug another problem arises.
I’m not going to spoil the movie for you by saying ‘it’s brilliant when ? does ?’ or ‘lookforward to the bit when ? says ? to ?’
Because this film needs to be watched with no spoilers. But, every second is counted for with glee and laughter and love. Every set up is excuted to bloody joy.

Make no mistake this is the funniest film of the decade. It’s smart, cool, and feels like it could happen. If a sequal is true (and it has been spoken about by the studios, though not any cast or writers) then they have a lot to live up to.
I Love You man which came out this year looked at ‘bro mance’ a love between to straight friends and how men need each other.
This film follows that but not without getting ‘lovey dovey’.

The Hangover explores the awkwardness of male bonding in its emotionally stunted protagonists. Phil, Stu and Alan come across as affable good-time guys, yet beneath the veneer they're fragile souls. Phil transforms from respectable schoolteacher into the group's aggressive alpha dog when work hours are over, dentist Stu has to tiptoe around his tyrannical girlfriend to even go on the Vegas trip, and socially maladjusted Alan often takes things a step too far trying to ingratiate with the group. Because of this dude dynamic Phillips relegates Graham, Sasha Barrese and Rachael Harris's characters to mere plot points.

Every comedy film from now on will have to live up this film. And not just me, my girlfriend loved it as well. So, not just one for the men.

Need more proof
The A-Team movie and other classic TV show’s about to reboot, one of the those being Doctor Who which came back to massive appeal. Prison Break finished, and Lost, Ashes To Ashes and 24 finishing next year, I’ve done my own list of the top 10 greatest (in my opinion) moments in Cult TV history.
The moments that made me gasp, exited, a little confused, shocked, actually worried for a characters safety, or just enjoyed to the fullest (normally all at the same time). The moments that changed the whole show, or raised it to it’s highest point. The moments not watched on a DVD box set, but week by week where cliff-hangers actually meant something.
Here’s MY top 10
You won’t all agree so feel free to add your comment at the bottom.

10-1 BEST MOMENTS IN CULT TV

10- 24 Season 5. Episode 1.
Just when you thought Jack had gone through some of the worst days ever, and all that was behind him, he started his next day of the worst way. With two old work friends attacked resulting in one dieing, and the other at near death, it was the death of a president that happened so quick that it made it all the more fitting that Jack would strike back.

9- Angel. Season 3. Sleep Tight
With Angel’s baby being kept safe in the hotel from the evil Holtz, Wesley becomes aware that a proverb may come true. ‘The vampire with a soul with kill his son’. Wesley takes maters in to his own hands. He kidnaps the baby, after beating Lorne, and runs. While the other member of Angels gang chase him, Wesley meets up with a women working for Holtz who (out of the blue and in the most shocking and quick way) slits Wesley’s throat and takes the baby. Leaving him bleeding to death on the floor. It may not be the greatest moment in the show, but it’s the moment where everything changes. Conner becomes a man, Wesley drops his stupid side and becomes very dark, and Angel seeks revenge (which never helps).

8- Ashes To Ashes. Series 2. Episode 8
The moment you think Alex Drake may have got out of her coma and back with her daughter, a message (ruining a perfectly good episode of In The Midnight Garden) from Gene Hunt on the TV screen claiming that her role with him isn’t finished yet. And, as Alex runs away, we see Gene at his weakest as he screams for help.

7- Star Trek The Next Generation. Season 3. The Best Of Both Worlds Part One
The Borg show up and unleash their worst strike, not only do they plan an attack, they kidnap the straight laced Captain Picard and turn him in to one of them. As the final moments stir up and the rest of the Enterprise look on a monitor they see Picard walks up to the screen, now turned in to the horrible Borg, he speaks in a calmer tone and quietly tells them he is ‘Locutus of Borg. Surrender or die. Resistance is futile’ and just as Ryker orders the ship to fire on the Borg the camera pans in to Picard who, if you look closley, has a small tear in his eye. Unable to stop what he is doing.

6- Prison Break. Season 2. The Killing Box
The season two fall finale ended the first half of the second season with a bang, or three bangs to be precise. With Linc and Mike arrested and being brought back to Fox River, FBI agent Mahone and company hitman Kellermen worked together to kill the brothers. They set them up so they would be in the escort van, and get to a point where they could escape, giving Mahone and Kellermen the excuse to kill them. With Linc and Mike taking their chance and escaping down a tunnel leading them in to the middle of an armed Mahone and Kellermen. Their fate sealed. Till, with the greatest moment in Prison Break (and the most heart pounding) Kellerman turned the gun on Mahone and shooting him to the ground and yelling to the brothers "President Reynolds ruined your life, she ruined my life. You want to take that bitch down? You just found your inside man, but it's got to be right now." Both Lincoln and Michael follow Kellerman. It was a great moment, for a split second you felt one of the brothers would actaully die. The moment it went down, and not another episode for four months was breath taking.

5- Lost. Season 1. Walkabout
The first moment Lost pulled the rug from under the viewers. The mysterious John Locke makes the other survivors of the plane crash question him. Through flash backs we see a different side of John Locke, a loser, friendless, a bit of a bore. While on the island he is running around after boar. Then in the final flashback we see John Locke being told by a being told by a leader of a ‘walkabout’ experience that he can’t come on the trip. We then see why. Locke wheels out behind the desk in a wheelchair. We cut back to the island to see Locke walking around the island wiggling his toes.

4- Life On Mars. Series Two. Episode 8
After only 16 episodes the greatest British TV show came to an end. Sam Tyler was finally going home. There was only one way to bring him home and it wasn’t pretty. All the clues since episode one started to make sense. The voices Sam heard in his head, the strange phone calls, the fact that 70’s TV’s were playing him cryptic messages all made sense. But, back home in the present day Sam Tyler becomes lost and confused and wonders if this is the life he is happy in. So, with the sound of David Bowie in the background, goes to the top of the roof. (Since this is the last ever episode I won’t spoil anymore what happens) But, what does happen concludes a storyline that gripped British TV. Was he mad, in a coma, or had he gone back in time? It was answered.

3- Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Season 2. Surprise.
After a season and a half the loved up Slayer and the Vampire with a soul finally get down and dirty and have sex. It shows the love between them that had gone strong, and for Buffy she wanted Angel to be her first. But, unaware that one pure moment of happiness takes Angels cursed soul away and turn him evil left viewers blown away. Angel leaves a sleeping Buffy and runs in the street, not feeling right he falls to his knees and screams. A innocent person walks by and Angel takes his first ever bite for years and years. Angel was once again Angelus.

2- Lost. Season 3. Through The Looking Glass
Season 3 of Lost ended with a shocking revelation. It’s down the many factors. The writing was so brilliant that the twist could not be seen, not since The Sixth Sense has there been a twist so shocking it changed everything. And also, Matthew Fox as Jack. Fox’s acting was brilliant. While the present day saw the ‘good guys’ take down the ‘others’, we kept getting what we thought were flashbacks to yet another Jack story. What else was there left to tell about him before the crash. It was boring flashbacks, flashbacks which had been getting boring for a while now. But, as the last flashback showed this episodes flashbacks were actually flash-forwards, looking in the future showing Jack and Kate had got of the island. The writers had tricked us. It was the moment that Lost found it’s feet again and took the story towards an end. The final scene was heart breaking, Jack telling Kate they needed to go back was about as shocking and twisty as you can get. Perfect.

1- Twin Peaks. Season 2. Lonely Souls
Regarded as the most important TV show ever. It spawned Lost, Prison Break, Heroes, Life On Mar’s to name just a few. The weird goings on in Twin Peaks, in the early 90’s, changed TV and the way it was filmed and written. The linchpin of the first season and a half was ‘Who Killed Laura Palmer’. This episode revealed it. But, it wasn’t as simple as just showing the person on screen, it was done in a operatic way as the killer struck again, scaring the pants of the viewers and shocking them to the core. Watching it today it still sends shivers down your spine. It turns the show on it’s head and forces you to confront your fears. While the viewer saw the killer, it still took FBI agent Cooper and his gang a few more episodes to find them.
It was bigger then what is the island, what’s happened to Sam Tyler, who shot JR? It was a classic. And for it’s influence and stunning look and sound the whole show deserves to clunk itself in the number one spot. The end of season 1, bang. The end of season 2 ‘how’s Annie?’ The black lodge. The talking backwards dwarf, Cooper’s dreams. Dale Cooper himself. A transvestite agent. The owls who are not what they seem. It was, I’ve said it before, a classic.

 Comments
</default:description>

With the Star Trek movie reminding us that the TV show may have be a little wooden, it still changed TV landscape.

GOODBYE SO LONG AND FOR SOME ONE MORE WAIT

The cult show season is ending it’s shows all around the same time, meaning sad geeks like me have to start watching something else.
First up to leave us was Lost Season 5. The show which was loved, then annoyed, then hated, then loved again by many causal viewers. But, for the fans who stuck with it the show has hit a high stride towards it’s end game. The main plus with this show is, unlike any other American shows, this show has an end date (with season 6 next year being the last). While the start of the season was a confusion of complex time travel madness, episode 6 to the finale in episode 17 was addictive TV with Lost finding what some had complained it had lost…it’s heart. With some of the major players getting less screen time it just served the right amount of action, love, craziness and more importantly ANSWERS!!!!!!! And with the parallels of Locke/Faith and Jack/Science starting to join up and respect each other (which was always the best bit) it was a gem of a season. With the past four seasons ending with some hint of what was to come in the next season, season 5 left on a white bang (literally) with no hint to the audience what season 6 was about. But, it being the last season and the answers, tension coming to head season 6 may prove to be the greatest season in a TV show since Prison Break season 1.

Which brings me on to Prison Break was ended for good with a little TV movie. While Prison Break (or any other shows for that mater) will ever top the first season of Prison Break it still kept it’s excitement levels up. And while the storylines got more over the top and unbelievable it was just a reminder that this show is pure blow away fun. Season 1 was about growing with the characters while a man broke his brother and other inmates out of Fox River Prison. It was the show that saw people sweating with excitement and tension, ad proving that 24 was not the only stressful show. Season 2 carried this on with the escaped inmates on the run, then season 3 was back in a different prison and more troubles started for our gang. Season 4 was all about bring down the company who had started this whole thing in the first place, and while some of the last episodes were like walking a dieing dog, the finale and the mini movie served up some of the shows greatest moments. And, while some of the characters died, arrested, free they all seemed to get the ending that was needed for them.

Ashes to Ashes ended it’s second series this week, with a ending that could serve itself proudly next to any American show. With one more series left to go it will be a sad state of a affair on British TV when it goes.
Being a spin of from Life On Mar’s it started in series one quite weak, mainly because Life On Mar’s was so addictive and cool. Life On Mar’s was also dark and gritty which fitted the mood of the 70’s, but with the 80’s being more colourful and over the top the show had to change. This second series was addictive to the core, with it’s week by week crime to solve, the troubled Alex Drake (played by the utterly gorgeous seductive Keeley Hawes) still trying to find a way home. Hints that Life On Mar’s Sam Tyler could appear in series three are still floating around the internet, and it would be a great plus. The ending of Life On Mar’s finished with the answers to Sam Tylers sudden appearance in the 70’s being dealt with, but with Ashes the story is more complex then what Sam went through but both shows seem to be about to clash…sweet. Ashes To Ashes is a cracking TV show with humour, action, time travel and great plots and characters that it’s going to be a very long year till we see Gene Hunt and Bolly Knickers back on our screen.

 Comments
</default:description>

MAY TV ROUND UP

Speaking to ComingSoon.net, Bruckheimer revealed that the studio is eager to make Pirates 4 with Johnny Depp before he stars as Tonto in a new Lone Ranger movie.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," Bruckheimer said. "We love the character and Johnny was really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. Pirates 4, it seems from reports, is going to be a Jack Sparrow story without the likes of Will and Eliabeth. Now, to be honest, the pirates films were more fun when they were not on screen and it was just Johnny Depp doing his crazy stuff. But, saying that having the love story and that otherside to the film kept the orginal three films grounded.
I just hope that Pirates 4 keeps the silly action scenes, the funny banter etc up but not to go so stupid and over the top that it's just a crazy mess.

Rumours that Russell Brand is going to play Jack Sparrows brother have not yet been confirmed either.

He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get Pirates made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

It's been long in talks over the past few years but it seems the A-Team movie is finally go to see the light of day.
It goes in to production later this year but no director who offcial dates have been set.

But, the big thing is the cast.
With the orginal cast either dead or to old (or in Mr T's case not willing) it's up to a new cast to take over.
Unlike the nasty rumours about a Ghostbusters 3, where in the old cast hand over the reigns to a brand new cast, this is going to feature a brand new cast starting from scratch.

So, far the only actor who has 'signed up' is Liam Neeson as Col. John "Hannibal" Smith.

I had to think about this for a while. Nesson is a great actor but is he Hannibal? After alot of thought and a cup of ice cold water I came to the idea that this is a brilliant casting move.
Liam is...shall we shall...in the older age bracket of the actors out there, and it would be wise to go with older cast then a brand new cast who were more then likly just swimming sperm when the orginal A-Team was on.

According to Variety, the Irish actor is in talks with 20th Century Fox to step into George Peppard's shoes for Joe Carnahan's action film.

Bradley Cooper has also been confirmed as in "early talks" to portray Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck, a role originated by Dirk Benedict in the '80s series. The Hangover star was linked with the part last month but later denied his involvement.

Larry (Ben Stiller) becomes another caretaker at the Smithsonian, where Kahmunrah, an evil Pharaoh will come to life with the reestablishing of a tablet as a magical force in the museum bringing the old exhibits (Such as Theodore Roosevelt and Dexter) and new exhibits (like General Custer and Al Capone) back to life, and in conflict with each other. Larry enlists the help of Amelia Earheart, who he develops a romantic interest in, and together they try to put everything back in order.

So....
Was the first film that good?
No.
Was a sequel needed?
No.
Did we get a sequel to a film that’s first film wasn’t that great?
Yes.

While this film is a light hearted family adventure with a good few lines in for good measure, it’s also quite a messy affair.
With the amount of comedic acting talent that is in this movie, you would have thought it could have been funnier then it actually was. Instead we are left with a film that delivers a few small chuckles and one or two laugh out loud moments. On whole it was a film where the trailer for it was filled with the funniest bits.

Most of the cast have been in film’s much funnier, but here they either act lazy or they rift of each other way to much to the point where you can see they are having a ball making this movie and we are not having as much fun watching it.

Ben Stiller plays his Ben Stiller role to a tee. It’s a funny role, but a role we have seen many times in films such as Meet The Parents, Along Came Polly, Something About Mary and so on. It’s now getting a little boring and smug. It’s a shame.
A massive shame. Ben Stiller is a great character actor. You only have to watch his role in Dodgeball to see that when he is giving a role that needs him to do more then make sarcastic comments in a straight man role he is a genius.
Ricky Gervais seems to be following him in his footsteps. Ricky Gervais is a funny man. The Office, and some of Extras (the two sitcoms he co wrote) will go down as some of the best comedy ever. But, David Brent, Andy Millman and Ricky Gervais all seem to be the same person. Sure he gave a gut wrenching performance in the 6th episode of The Office series 2 (to the point even I had a lump in my throat) but here it’s the same old stuff.
Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan do some good stuff. They are both at their best when they are together on screen. Wilson does the same old stuff he always does. Coogan though shines forth with a better played out performance. When their characters finally go in to battle it raises one of the laugh out moments.
Robin William’s gets very little screen time and is wasted. This, though, maybe down to the fact in real life William’s has been very ill (though he was seen on TV the other day joking about his heart scares and saying he was better).

Two people come out of the movie in better acting stakes. First we have Amy Adam’s who impressed us with her version of Amelia Earhart. Adam’s had proven herself as a bit part actor in many films (Enchanted. Catch Me If You Can. Doubt etc) and TV shows (The USA’s version of The Office) and here she acts with all the excitement and vigor you imagine Earhart did have.
Second out we have Hank Azaira (Many voices from the Simpson’s, a bit part in Friends, Run Fat Boy Run) he is a joy to watch (and most importantly funny) as Kahmunrah (he also plays the statue The Thinker). He plays him with all the pomposity he can find, and adds a nice little lisp to the role.

Sadly with so little time and so many actors and museum artifacts coming to life there’s not much room for everyone to shine.
If I were you I’d just watch the trailer.

The film runs for an hour and a half, a nice little time for a quick fix from a family adventure. The story is quite simple and many things will bring a smile to your face. Seeing history figures come back to life or re seen is normally very funny. Just look at Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
It just wasn’t the laugh out comedy that I was expecting. Though many people around me while watching it were laughing their guts out (as well as the bastards given a running commentary behind me).
The script just wasn’t that strong in laughs. When it was clear the cast were ad-libbing and trying to make the other person on screen laugh it was just embarrassing. The director Shawn Levy let his cast take over the film and by the look of it was never willing to shout ‘cut!’
It’s a shame.

All in all this is a quick fix in family adventure and raises a few laughs. For that I’ll give it 5 out of 10. But, because of Arzaira and Adam’s I’ll make this a sweet 6/10.

If there is going to be a third then either the director needs to grow some balls, or the script needs to be a hell of a lot funnier.

MARKS- 6/10

Philadelphia.
The Green Mile.
Turner And Hooch (okay, maybe just for me then)
And many, many more.

Angels and Demon’s, though, is not brilliant. To mention it on the same page as the films listed above is quite an insult.
Angels and Demons is based on the book, of the same name, written by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci Code was then made in to a film staring Tom Hank’s as Robert Langdon and directed by Ron ‘Happy Day’s’ Howard. It sparked mass criticism by religious groups for it’s outrageous tale, it’s view that that Jesus had a child and so on…AND sooooooo on.
…Oh, and other people who saw the film just thought it was crap.
I kinda liked it. Sure, the best moment was watching Tom Hanks keep a straight face when he builds up the films tension by saying ‘quick we need to get to a library!’ Hardly the most exiting line in film’s history.
But, now Angels and Demon’s is here. Directed again by Ron ‘Happy Day’s’ Howard and starring Tom Hanks. This film has been turned in to a sequel of sorts. It seems to fit the piece though. The book, it’s based on, is a prequel to ‘Da Vinci’, but since this is follow on in film terms references have been slung in to (I guess) remind people they are watching a follow up.
I don’t know.

The film, according to my girlfriend, has cut a lot out from the book. I’ve not read the book so all I can review on is the film as a stand alone.
The film is quite boring.
That’s not to say it’s rubbish.
But, the pace is a little boring.
Ron ‘Happy Day’s’ Howard tries his best to build up the tension. The last half an hour builds up close to boiling point, but to be honest by that point I was just getting bored to care. The film is, for the most of it, set over six hours, with a bomb about to blow up and priests getting killed every hour, so you would have thought there were lots of room to build up the tension to the point where the writers and directors of the hit (stressful) show 24 would even start to take notes. But, while the tension doesn’t quicken, the pace of time does. One moment you at 8pm then five minutes later your at half 9.

One of the big problems is Tom Hanks character Robert Langdon. He’s hardly the Indiana Jones whip cracking, funny, rogue like character who also happens to know his history and his symbols. Langdon acts like a virgin who has no friends. Maybe he has a cat, though I doubt the cat would like him. Maybe in the book he comes across better and less ‘know-it-all’, but as I said I haven’t read the book so can’t comment.
Hank’s does his best, but with the guy he has got to play there’s nothing exiting about him.

The rest of the cast come out similar.
Ewan Mcgreggor does well as a priest.
Ayelet Zurer also does well as a women who does…stuff with bombs and can …help out???????
That’s a problem.
Half the time most of the characters aren’t fleshed out enough for the audience to fully understand what they are up to.

The film never seems to let the audience in. Sure, not all films have to treat members of the public as idiots but in this case I would have liked to know who and what I was rooting for.

The film passed a few hours. For many I’m sure you will love it.
But, for me this was a damp film with little pleasure.

In the first season of J. J Abrams TV show LOST two characters, Locke and Boone, are walking through the jungle searching for a member of their group that’s gone missing. So they don’t get lost they tie bits of Boone’s red shirt on tree trucks so they can find their way back. Boone makes the observation to Locke that ‘in the TV show Star Trek anyone with a red shirt dies. It always the poor guy you haven’t seen before but has just come along to make up numbers.’
Years later J.J Abrams has decided not to mess with some formulas, and kept the red shirt in. If only for a moment and not (if we’re being picky) actually a red shirt, it shows this is more then a remake or reboot. This is what Trekies (the fans) remember and love from the TV show and films but up dated.
It’s also what everyone who hated Star Trek remembers and hated from the TV and made better for them.

It’s all there.
The little 'in' gags. The short skirts for the female officers. Kirk making out with a green alien. A friendship that starts with hate. Bone’s ‘dam it Jim’s’. The poor soul who wears a red shirt. The Vulcan grip. And even the ‘these are the voyages of the….

I have mentioned before my anger at how some trailers deceive you in to thinking one thing about the movie and what it’s about, to actually find it it’s different.
The same can go for this films trailer.
You get the impression we are going to have to sit through a movie where the first half is just about Kirk and his up bringing and it won’t be until the end there will be this massive fight.
I was wrong.
The first thing we witness in the movie is the birth of James T Kirk as his father saves his, his mothers and 800 other crew members by killing himself in glory. We then cut to Kirk as a young boy, being a rebel, to Kirk in a bar room brawl. It’s here we witness our first signs that Abrams and script writers Orci and Kurtzman are not pissing about. In walks Captain Christopher Pike (played by Bruce Greenwood) and tells Kirk to join up in the star fleet and be even better then his father.
Now, let me take you back to the very, very, very first ever episode of Star Trek. It was 1966 and the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise wasn’t Kirk it was Captain Pike. It wasn’t until the second episode that Kirk showed up.
Phew!
We then cut forward three years and see Kirk, Bone, Spock and all the gang ready to help when a Vulcan planet is attacked.
It’s where the action and loud explosions happen.
And while the main rebooting story kicks of after only half an hour it doesn’t rush things. If your new to the Star Trek world your not confused. In half an hour we understand the lead characters already.
This is down the writers and director getting the source material right, but also down to the actors.
Chris Pine who plays Kirk is brilliant. He’s everything I imagine Shanter wanted to be but wasn’t allowed at a time when film and TV was PC. While Kirk in the TV show and old film was cool and sexy, it was only ever hinted at that he was this cocky, dirty fighter, who slept around and was one of the most intelligent people around. Sure Kirk slept around with green aliens in the show, but it felt a little wrong to watch. Pine nails it. He’s the hero, though the rules are broken. He’s sexy enough so the women fancy him but he’s such a bastard at times that he sometimes gets it wrong. He handles the comedy and the action well. And, now the trekies have a real man to worship as so do most the guys who aren’t trekie fans.
Zac Quinto (from Heroes) plays the pointed haired Spock. I forgot how annoying Spock can be, but after an hour I remembered why. Vulcan’s don’t show emotion. But, Spock being half human and half Vulcan he was always confused. This film pushes Spock further then I had seen in the TV show and the old film. He plays it with the flared nostrils and ever so slightly smirk that, again, was needed in the TV show.
Other cast members are also great. Eric Bana plays Neo with the spit and hatred that’s needed. Simon Pegg heads up the fan boys quote as Scotty (trust me the Scottish accent after while works), Zoe Salenda as Uhura is as sexy and spunky as she should be (with the shirt skirts still there) and Karl Urban as ‘Bone’ who looks like he is having so much pleasure as he shouts ‘dam it Jim’.
And also Leonard Nimoy as Spock from the future, in more then just a hyped up cameo. He plays a larger part in it then I had thought. But, it works.

The action works fantastic. Abrams skill shine throughout.

This is a film that shows what a movie can be.

So, where next. Surely a sequel is just around the corner. They say the sequel to a great film is never as good. But, with recent films like Spiderman 2 and The Dark Knight proving that the first is not always the best means hope is left for the sequel. And, who can forget that other space film Star Wars. The sequel The Empire Strikes Back was 100 times better then a New Hope.

But will this reboot take the curse.

The curse of the Star Trek films where every odd number film is rubbish and the equal number ones are fantastic.
If that is the case, and they are not calling this Star Trek 11 but Star Trek 1, then this is meant to be a very poor film, so imagine what the next film will be like.

I can’t wait.
